Utagawa Toyokuni Kunisada, or Toyokuni III (1768-1864), was one of the leading print artists of his day. He became the pupil of Toyokuni at age 15, producing his first actor prints under the name Kunisada. He took the studio name Toyokuni in 1844. To avoid confusion with Toyokuni II, who was still alive, he was referred to as Kameido Toyokuni. He became quite famous for his inspirational portraits and triptychs of theater actors.
